One of the most common questions about cannabidiol oil asks if CBD oil for ADHD is effective. Many who contend with Attention Defecit/Hyperactive Disorder are prescribed powerful amphetamines, like Concerta, to cope with their symptoms. But can CBD oil also help improve the quality of life for those with ADHD?
What is ADHD?
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 10.4 percent of all children between 5 and 17 were diagnosed with ADHD between 2013 and 2015. More were male than female, and many lived below the federal poverty level. Because more families with an ADHD child are either on Medicaid or uninsured, accessing doctors and medication is difficult.
As a result, families turn to other solutions available over the counter and at a lower price than prescription medication. CBD oil is one common solution – but is CBD oil for ADHD effective in easing symptoms?
Is there research on CBD Oil for ADHD?
Doctors have researched the connection between ADHD and the endocannabinoid system since 2012, and the results are promising. A published study in Journal of Psychopharmacology discovered that rats treated with 3 mg of cannabidiol “not only normalized social investigative behavior, but it increased beyond control levels.” The CBD also outperformed clozapine, an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia.
This lead to another study conducted on humans by Kings College London, Queen Mary University of London and the British NHS. In the randomized-controlled trial, 30 adults took either a dose of CBD or a placebo. Those who took CBD observed a “nominally significant” reduction of hyperactivity and improved attention span. Those given CBD also had positive effects on “activity and cognitive performance.”
The research concluded: “ADHD may represent a subgroup of individuals that gain cognitive enhancement and reduction of ADHD symptoms from the use of cannabinoids.” The study also calls for “the need for further research into the effects of cannabinoids on ADHD symptoms and impairments.” This suggests cannabinoids may be helpful in easing ADHD
So does CBD oil for ADHD work?
The peer-reviewed evidence suggests ADHD symptoms may be eased with CBD oils. The lab research and structured studies show people who took ADHD in supervised conditions reported feeling more alert, less compulsive and were more focused in their tasks. Rats also showed the same improvements, meaning there is more than anecdotal evidence. However, more research is required before doctors will make definitive claims about CBD oil for ADHD.
How much CBD oil for ADHD should I take?
Unfortunately, there is no universal CBD oil serving you should take to expect results. Everyone reacts a little different based on their internal chemistry and other factors.
If you worry about your sensitivity to CBD oil, start with low-level tinicture drops and work up from there. Some find a 300mg bottle of CBD oil works best. But others need a higher amount, going all the way up to 1000mg or higher.
Can I take CBD oil for ADHD instead of my medication?
No! Before changing or stopping any prescription medication, talk to your physician. Only your doctor should make recommendations about how to approach your medicines and dosage levels. Furthermore, it’s important to note the Food and Drug Administration does not recognize CBD oil alone as a drug to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Using CBD oil for ADHD alone is not intended to do any of those things – but like another supplement, it may help an overall wellness plan.
But adding CBD oil as part of your regular routine can give a natural boost to your medication. If you are concerned that your medication alone isn’t cutting it anymore, consider giving CBD oil a try. You may find that it will help you get through the day with more energy and focus than with your medication alone.
